Mythbusting Food Pantries

There are a lot of myths and misconceptions about food pantries that result in fewer people feeling comfortable using their services. Together, we can break down these myths and give people the truth, hopefully inspiring more people to not only give help but be ok with receiving it as well.

Here are some of the most common myths and misconceptions we can find:

#1. You must be homeless to qualify for food pantry services.

BUSTED! Many people associate food pantries with homelessness, and while homeless people utilize food pantries and similar services, that doesn’t mean it is only for the homeless. Many people fall on hard times, in all walks of life. Not everyone that gets served at a typical food pantry are homeless, and we shouldn’t allow that stigma to keep people from the help they need.

#2. You have to be eligible for SNAP in order to qualify for pantry services.

BUSTED! You do not need to qualify for SNAP (food stamps) or any other assistance service to receive support from your local food pantry. Even though SNAP is based on income level, oftentimes it only provides for half the month's worth of food. By utilizing both SNAP and food pantries you can be sure you are covered for the whole month.

#3. You can only visit one pantry each month.

Semi-Busted! Some pantries will restrict visits to make room for everyone, but this doesn’t stop you from visiting multiple food pantries. You should be able to make sure your needs are met every month. But don’t forget there are many in need, so don’t do any apocalypse hoarding off the generosity of your community!

#4. You must be unemployed to be eligible.

Semi-Busted! Although some pantries may require this, each food pantry is able to set its own guidelines. That being said, at most pantries the eligibility is self-attested. You may be asked to provide some information such as identification and/or proof of address. You should call into the food pantry beforehand to be sure you meet requirements and have any documentation needed.

#5. Food pantries only offer canned food.

BUSTED! Actually, food pantries offer a wide range of foods, both perishable and non-perishable. You can find dairy, fresh vegetables and fruits, baked goods, and even frozen meats! Many people assume they would only receive soup and canned chicken, but there are many more food offerings available!

Most food pantries only offer food, but there are many that give out personal care products, toiletries, school supplies, and other needs! They may even have services to offer larger items, from car seats to job training.
